Growing from Glory to Glory

Growing from Glory to Glory

And all of us, as with unveiled face, [because we] continued to behold [in the Word of God] as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are constantly being transfigured into His very own image in ever increasing splendor and from one degree of glory to another; [for this comes] from the Lord [Who is] the Spirit. 2 Corinthians 3:18 AMP

WHAT IS YOUR POINT-OF-VIEW?

“That you are not consciously falling behind or lacking in any spiritual endowment or Christian grace [the reception of which is due to the power of divine grace operating in your souls by the Holy Spirit], while you wait and watch [constantly living in hope] for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and [His] being made visible to all.  And He will establish you to the end…” -1 Cor. 1:7,8a AMP

Therefore you do not lack any spiritual gift as you eagerly wait for our Lord Jesus Christ to be revealed.” -1 Cor. 1:7 NIV

When I was in my early twenty’s I used to sit amazed at the stories missionaries shared in church of what it was like on the mission field.  By the time they were finished sharing I was so enthused that I wished I could get out on that mission field too.  It did not take me very long to think being a missionary was not for me though, actually about 10 minutes!  When I started reviewing what the missionary went through, the hardships, the dwindling support, and being so far from home I reasoned that it just was not for me.  You see, I listened to the voice of reason instead of the Holy Spirit.

I listened to that voice over and over again for at least ten years.  Things changed in the spring of 1987 though.  I was going through a very rough time in my life.  I had started crying out to God, begging Him to get me out of the rut I was in.  It was not long before God put me in a situation where I had the opportunity to discuss my frustrations with a Pastor friend of mine.  We prayed about them and then visited for a few minutes afterwards.  He asked me if I had heard about what his son just finished doing.  I told him I had not.  He stated that David had sold all his ski equipment and used the money to go on a short-term mission.  I pondered this on the way home and throughout that next day.  You see, God is so faithful to answer us when we cry out to Him.  Through a simple conversation between friends He put a spark in me that completely changed my life, and more importantly, my point-of-view.

Over the next few months I found myself actually considering going on a short term mission.  How could I do it?  I had only a couple of hundred dollars in the bank so it was beyond my financial means, but I kept sensing and anticipating that it would all work out.  God was fanning the spark He put in me and a little fire of believing the impossible as possible was born.  I really made it a matter of prayer and shared it with an elderly friend of mine who agreed with me in prayer.  Then I had a dream of being on an airliner and coming into a landing approach to an island.  I shared this with my elderly friend and we both thought it could be I was meant to go to mission school in Kona, Hawaii.  I still could not see how it was possible.  I would have to give up a good paying job and leave all my friends and church family.  Let me assure you, though, God is faithful!

To make a long story short, within five months He took the spark of possibility He had planted in me to a full fire and the stronger the fire became the stronger I listened to Him.  He then prompted me to go to mission school in Salem, Oregon and provided the financial means to do so.     My short term mission training in reading His Word, prayer, spiritual warfare, and sharing the gospel has turned into a lifetime habit and I continue to grow stronger in and closer to the Lord.  So what happened?  My original point-of-view was that I did not think I was able, have enough money, and was afraid of trying something new because I thought I would fail, so I did not try.  God helped me see that on my own I was not able:  He became my ability.      He showed me I did not have the money:  He gave me His money (and let me tell you, His bank holdings are limitless!)  He took my fear and exchanged it with His courage.  God exchanged my point-of-view with His.

Are you struggling with something you think impossible?  Look at it through God’s point-of-view!

“He can’t make our weakness His strength unless we allow Him access to it by a committed, daily, relationship with Him.”              -T. Baker

LOOK TO JESUS! (Step Out Of the Boat – Part II)

“Then He directed the disciples to get into the boat and go before Him to the other side, while He sent away the crowds.  And after He had dismissed the multitudes, He went up into the hills by Himself to pray. When it was evening, He was still there alone.  But the boat was by this time out on the sea, many furlongs [a furlong is one-eighth of a mile] distant from the land, beaten and tossed by the waves, for the wind was against them.  And in the fourth watch [between 3:00—6:00 a.m.] of the night, Jesus came to them, walking on the sea.  And when the disciples saw Him walking on the sea, they were terrified and said, It is a ghost! And they screamed out with fright.  But instantly He spoke to them, saying, Take courage! I Am! Stop being afraid!”  Matthew 14:22-27 AMP

Last week I shared with you about how God will speak into your life when the circumstances around you are scary.  This week I would like to encourage you to become even bolder in the face of fearful things from the verses following Jesus’ command to take courage and stop being afraid:

Matthew 14:28-29
“And Peter answered Him, Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water.  He said, Come! So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water, and he came toward Jesus.”

My Sunday School teachers always portrayed Peter as a bold and impulsive man, yet even after Jesus told them I AM and to stop being afraid it sounds like Peter was a bit doubtful.  He said, “Lord, if it is You….”  I am like Peter.  Sometimes I just need a little more to nudge me into fully believing but when I do grasp what God is showing me I go “gun-ho” right along into it.  Jesus told him to “Come!”  Peter stepped out of the boat.  Once he stepped out did he pause?  No, he immediately walked toward Jesus.

“But when he perceived and felt the strong wind, he was frightened, and as he began to sink, he cried out, Lord, save me [from death]!  Instantly Jesus reached out His hand and caught and held him, saying to him, O you of little faith, why did you doubt?  And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased.”   Matthew 14:30-32 AMP

Now we come to the thing that really struck me as odd in the story.  What caused Peter to sink?  Did he notice the waves?  No, he FELT the strong wind and became afraid.  There is that fear again!  Peter allowed himself to FEEL the strong wind and he began to sink.  I cannot count the many times I have allowed the circumstances of my life dictate my actions.  Like Peter, when I feel things are not going right I would like to give up.  That is when I absolutely MUST be like Peter.  What did he do?  “…he cried out, Lord, save me from death! – Instantly Jesus reached out…and held him….”  Peter got his focus back on Who it needed to be on and cried out for help, and Jesus delivered him.  It is like the phrase that is often used in my church when things look bleak:  “But God!”  Somehow that phrase helps me get my focus back on the Truth instead of the circumstances.  Circumstances say that there is robbery, murders, mayhem, dirty politics, wars, famines and other such atrocities happening all around us, but Truth dictates that God is still in control over ALL circumstances.  ALL OF THEM!

The challenge I put before you today:  Do not allow fear to prevent you from stepping out of your boat, and once you are out there do not allow circumstances to cause fear well up in your life, go to the Truth:  Jesus!  Cry out to Him, and He will reach out, hold and deliver you.

THOUGHT:  It is not necessarily safer to be in God’s will.  Things will happen, but keep your focus on Him and He will see you through!

TAKE COURAGE! (Step Out Of the Boat – Part I)

I Am! Stop being afraid! Matthew 14:22-27 AMP

It is hard to ignore the things going on around us:  robbery, murders, mayhem, dirty politics, wars, famines, and…well I could go on and on with this list but I think you get the picture.  This week I was reading a magazine article pointing out a number of prophecies from the Bible that have to be fulfilled before Jesus returns.  The article kept pointing out that although things are bad now, it will get much worse.  The more I read the article, the more anxious I became.  Fear seemed to be gripping my heart.  I felt like crying out, “Lord it is just too much, too much!”  Then in the midst of this mental storm I heard God’s strong quiet voice reminding me that He is still in control.  Like the disciples I was shook up by what I saw around me and I let it rob me of the courage God has given me.  Oh how those words at the end of Matthew 14:27 resounded in my heart, “Take courage!  I AM!  Stop being afraid!”

Let me encourage you; the next time you find yourself stressed or anxious over something that is happening to you, your family, your friend or something you hear in the news take a moment and listen for what God has to say about it.  He is still in control you know, and He will encourage you with just the right word on the subject.  It might just be, “Take courage!  I AM!  Stop being afraid!”
